Cheem book that I'm reading

Very bored on the way home.

Wan to do work but dun feel like publicising the fact that I'm a teacher.

Other choice is to read this book I bought over the weekend. But juz realised it's kinda cheem... And that was juz the intro.

Next choice - listen to music or play game on my new handphone. But battery low.

Last option - one of the reasons I bought this new phone. To BLOG! :)

Argh! Spent yet more money...

Yup. Spent another small fortune on tech gadgets... Got a new handphone for free - but spent money on a bluetooth headset and extra memory stick.

As my fren said, i'm a tech whore. :)

Resistance

Sigh... Had to resist buying my chinese magazines this month. Coz just spent a small fortune on more cosmetics. And on 3 management and leadership books.

Mondrian Art Wall

Piet Mondrian (b. Amersfoort, Netherlands, March 7, 1872 — d. New York City, February 1, 1944) was a Dutch painter.

He was an important contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group, which was founded by Theo van Doesburg. Despite being well-known, often-parodied and even trivialized, Mondriaan's paintings exhibit a complexity that belies their apparent simplicity.

He is best known for his non-representational paintings that he called "compositions", consisting of rectangular forms of red, yellow, blue, white or black, separated by black rectilinear lines. They are the result of a stylistic evolution that occurred over the course of nearly 30 years and continued beyond that point to the end of his life.

The Mondrian Generator attempts to create Mondrian-like gridded pictures with coloured squares, in a random manner. Would most DEFINITELY paint one on one of the walls of my future house.

Entranced by Widgets

Sigh...

Here's what happened. Was updating my blog last night when I accidentally pressed on "New Template" or something like dat. And with that one click, my old blog template was GONE!!!

All the links on the side bar, all the funny things... Almost died on the spot...

Took a long while for me to remember most of the stuff that I wanted on my blog. Found out more about these widgets thing-a-mies... And started loading them on my blog like crazy.

Here's one more:

*grin*

PS. Got really irritated by the relentless music playing on the blog so I transferred it to an earlier blog entry. Just click on the picture above and you'd still get to play the game. Cheers!

The City I'd Like to Get Lost In

Okies. Since I'm asking people to tell me the city they would like to get lost in, I suppose it's only fair and polite to tell you which city I'd like to get lost in...

NEW YORK!

That's the city I would like to get lost in.

Many people might assume I would say London. It was actually what I was thinking of at first. But decided I would like a change.

In my mind, New York is more colourful and yet I can find monochrome if I need it, less gentrified but not crass, faster pace of life with ample space to zone out. There's Broadway instead of West End, Central Park instead of Hyde Park, Metropolitan instead of the Tate... The list can go on...

Well, time to go to bed. There's still work tmr!

Widget crazy

Do I really know my friends?

Something struck me during the RJ 10-year Reunion at Butter Factory.

Whenever we bumped into an old acquaintance, WS would ask him or her about his (or her) work. Her questions were highly intelligent. But just too much to worry our heads over during drinks at a club. Nothing wrong with her questions. I wish I could ask such astute questions too. But, guess it's just wrong timing and wrong place...

Anyway, came across this interesting stack of cards on which questions have been printed to help people know themselves and their friends better.

So, I'm going to try this simple social experiment with an easy question...

Do help me out and gimme some responses!

Coming up soon!

Harry Potter - Deathly Hallows

Yoohoo!

Woke up this morning and got the announcement: "Your book is here..." by my brother. Was brushing my teeth when he told me, so no violent jumping in the air and shouting - just a smile and quickly finished washing up.

No need breakfast. Just grab the book, go back to bed and read, read, read...

Okay. Lunch time. Break for lunch. But never mind. Can still read while eating. So continue reading.

Somehow, this book is not as engaging as the previous books. Maybe expectations too high. Or getting old. Cannot seem to absorb what was going on and had to re-read some pages twice to understand the story.

Break for tuition. But brought book along. Can still read while kid do his work mah. *laugh* End up the kid also interested in the book and asked to borrow when I'm done with the book.

Okies. Finish tuition, go back home. Read until eyes very tired. 4 pm already. 5 pm have to get ready for RJ 10-year reunion. Never mind. Take a nap first. Otherwise, how to survive the night?

Darn! Woke up 5 pm. Picked up book and continued reading. Ok, say give myself 30 minutes to read. 5.30 pm must go get ready. Supposed to meet friend at 7 pm. Die lah. 6 pm still reading book. Only half-way through some more. Really very slow hor?

Okies. Really have to go wash up and change. Thankfully, now only need about 15-20 minutes to put on make-up. Spent more time deciding what to wear. Not bad. Left my place around 7.30 pm and got to Butter Factory in 15 minutes. Traffic was great today. And what a surprise! I think I was the first one there.

Looked around. Nobody I seem to recognise. Hey, there's one. Oh no. I know who it is. Walk away. Go find WS. Oops, he's following. He caught up. Hi! Yes. There's a reunion going on. Hm... Nope, dunno who else is coming. Let me go find my fren. See you later!

Walked to the end of Robertson Walk. Suddenly, heard many explosions. Oh! It's the fireworks from the NDP Preview. *grin* At least I managed to see some fireworks if the night turns out a dud.

Okies. Toilet is FINALLY available to be used. That's all for now. Talk to you later!

Resisting the temptation to spend $$$

Trying very hard to resist buying a new handphone...

Lotsa people very upset with me coz I never pick up the phone. My phone's not very loud to begin with and it's almost always buried deep in whichever bag I'm using and protected by its thick pouch.

So, very tempted to buy a new phone. Plus, it's been a year since I bought my Eten. Fingers itching to try new phone interface. Also, need a slimmer phone to go out with when I'm using a very small bag or without a bag at all.

Anyway, it's basically down to these 3 choices:

Top Choice: Motorola SLVR L72

Pros:
  • Includes USB cable
  • Free 512 MB MicroSD card (which costs less than $10 anyway)
  • FM radio
  • Chinese characters

Cons:
  • Has to pay $48
  • Not very pretty design
  • A big bulky but thin (11 mm)

Second Choice: Samsung Ultra Edition 8.4 (Z370)

Pros:
  • Includes USB cable (but useless coz it's USB 1.1)
  • Very thin (8.4 mm)
  • Chinese characters

Cons:
  • Has to pay $38
  • Even less pretty than the Motorola (why dun have the black version???)
  • Very slow USB 1.1 (if I choose to use USB but since it's 1.1, it's highly doubtful)

Third Choice: Sony Ericsson K610i Lite

Pros:
  • Great design
  • It's red in colour
  • $0!!!

Cons:
  • Use of Memory Stick (but it comes with free 64 MB Memory Stick... enough for 20 songs?)
  • Thick (17 mm)
  • No earpiece (how to listen to music???)
  • No USB cable (but guess I can use Bluetooth for file transfers...)

On a high...

Ups and downs, highs and lows...

Low at first, coz went to sleep without doing any work.

But happy, coz I woke up at 5 am! But ended up using the time to sort my papers and still left my house around 6.45 am. Reached taxi stand to see long queue of people waiting for cabs, which will take their time to come because it was 10 more minutes to 7 am, when the $2 surcharge comes on.

Still happy coz the bus came by and I hopped onto the bus to go to work for the first time in 3 weeks. Hope it's the start of a new trend...

Not so happy when MT took her time to scold the kids and used up my free period which I had intended to use for marking the 2E graph papers.

Even more not happy when I couldn't finish marking during the following free period. Never mind... It's time for the last 4T lesson of the week. Single period some more. And I prepared so many food stuffs for their lesson on preservation.

Hm... Idea - next lesson, shall attempt to talk about mummification as part of preservation technique? *grin*

Happier coz the 4T seems to have had fun during the lesson - they got to eat stuff in class and hopefully learnt about some preservation techniques.

Happiest, managed to quickly finish marking the 2E graphs after all during the next free period and lugged all my stuff for 2 double periods back to back. Super heavy lor!

Thankfully, bumped into a student on the way to class and she helped carry some of my stuff to class.

Students got back their graph tests and then were mostly on task drawing yet more graphs. Using IT like I did might have been more effective but how to? No screen, no projector, no nothing in class. And the comp labs are always booked. Now, even the LTs are also booked. Had to resort to ITR 3, will have to check it out to make sure projector, etc are all inside and can use. And most importantly, got at least 42 chairs inside the room.

The 3Ns also did their work quite diligently today so things could not have gone better today. I always knew 13 works for me!

After lessons finished, had to quickly rush out the admin & paper work for the Sec 4s going to Ngee Ann. Did up all their contacts, team groupings, got the handphone, made sure everything was in Mr Ngo's hands. Yippee! Wonder if I'd have preferred to go with the kids to Ngee Ann or stay at school like I was doing.

Anyway, more high when BL came to tell me no need to sit in for ICC today. But helped her to do up the admin & paper work regarding kids who have missed a lot of CCA sessions. Finished it with time to spare and wasted a lot of time coz I was waiting for Mr Ngo to come back.

However, missed him totally when he came back. Hope he's holding on to the clip board I lent to him. Cannot find anywhere already - the clip is at the side of the board rather than at the top. And only cost $2.

Okies. Very tired... Shall come back to report more later about my dinner + movie - the latest Harry Potter!

PS. Reminder to myself - check new timetable for myself + for the kids.

Cheers!

On MC today

I hate my job whenever I take MC...

Already sick and feeling terrible. Have to feel worse when there are so many things that are to be done YESTERDAY...

Kenah sporadic leg cramps since yesterday afternoon. It's probably due to dehydration. But friend says it's due to lack of sodium in my diet. Will check with doctor later.

Anyway, kept waking up due to the leg cramping and the lack of sleep caused my runny nose to activate... Argh! Ar-choo!

Many thanks to the various colleagues for helping me out!

Okies. Going off to see doctor now.

Running at Sentosa

Jio-ed Noel to go Sentosa to run this evening.

Thought it was a dreadfully short route. Never did I realise that it was actually 1.7 km long one-way! Therefore, I actually ran about 3.4 km that evening!

Yeh! Here's the route we ran.

Countdown to RJC Class 97 F.M (fond memories)

Yeah! Can't wait to see the old campus yet again. Last time was when RJ had this big 'party' to move over to the new campus at Bishan. But just loved the old campus. It's so much more homey.

Anyway, for those interested:

(many thanks to Debbie for getting approval from Dunman High)

Which to buy?

As I was saying, very tempted to buy a new phone after using one of my student's phone.

Found the following 'free' phones from Singtel. Which one should I buy?

Nokia 2626

Samsung M300

Sony Ericsson K610i

Sony Ericsson K510i

Sony Ericsson W200i

BenQ Siemens S81

Samsung Z370

Motorola SLVR L72

So, anybody wanna give me some advice?

Newspapers Collection Exercise

Woke up early this morning to violent thunder, lightning and heavy heavy rain. Got so worried that my newspapers collection exercise had to be cancelled. Called up someone who lived near the school to get a more accurate weather report and when the rain showed some signs of letting up, decided to go on with the exercise. Was really thinking of cancelling at a point of time...

Got over to the taxi stand and boy, was there a loooooong queue! Why? Because there were tons of P6 students 'rushing' to get to NUS to take the entry test for NUS High. Thankfully, there was a cab who was due to change shift in CCK and I managed to jump queue and got to school in time.

Not sure how 'motivational' I was - dun think I was quite effective... The kids remained very slackened and took their time to move to their assigned blocks. The rain perhaps? I know I definitely would have liked to stay in bed... Stomach was grumbling as I made my rounds to the various collection points but no time to makan... Onwards I go...

Some students really surprised me with their enthusiasm and attitude to help out in the exercise. Some students did not, with their lack of initiative and needed constant pushing to put in a minimal effort.

Many thoughts and things I wanna say about the above. Let me gather my thoughts first - will pen them down in another post.

Phone died after about an hour into the exercise - I knew I should have charged it fully last night! Borrowed one of the students' phones. Now very tempted to get a new phone.

6 more days...

Yoohoo! Only 6 more days to Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix movie! But not sure who I will be watching it with. Any volunteers?

And 14 more days to the LAST book - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!

I hope it gets delivered quickly, on time and early! Then can finish it within the weekend! *grin*

Quotation

Heard this from a fren today... Can so relate to it...

"We the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful.

We have done so much with so little for so long, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing."

Perseverence is not a long race; it is many short races one after another. by Walter Elliott

Haiz... Should I sign up for this run too?

Just found out from a friend who has been running for the past 2-3 years about these runs coming up in 2007.
  1. 1 July Milk Run
  2. 8 July Passion Run
  3. 22 July Mizuno Wave Run
  4. 26 Aug Singapore Bay Run [i.e. Army Half Marathon & Safra Sheares Bridge Run]
  5. 9 Sep Shape Run
  6. 21 Oct Great Eastern Women Run
  7. 28 Oct Real Run
  8. 2 Dec Stanchart Singapore Marathon
Milk Run will be taking place in a couple of hours.

Registration is closed for the Passion Run.

Debating whether to sign up for the Mizuno Wave Run and the Singapore Bay Run.

Have already signed up for the Shape Run.

Need to check schedule to see if can fit in the Great Eastern.

Real Run cannot - no 5 km. But it's interesting coz you have to run on at least 7 km of road + 1 km of sand + 1 km of trail + 1 km of runway - total 10 km! Hm... think I may sign up for the Real Run if I continue to run twice or thrice a week?

If I can maintain running regularly, I probably will also join the Stanchart - it's also minimum 10 km!

Found the following from SGRunners.Com
  1. 20 July NUS Race 5
  2. 3 Aug NIE Director's Relay Run
  3. 5 Aug MR25 5 km Time Trial
  4. 18 Aug Run NUS!
  5. 16 Sept Run For Hope [For Cancer Research]
